Reconditioned engines are engines that have been completely re-built to meet the manufacturer's specifications. Vehicle owners sometimes have to choose between having to replace the vehicle and fitting a new or reconditioned engine when their vehicle's engine has completely seized or is dead. Replacing a vehicle is a viable option only if it is in a very bad condition and in need of extensive repairs. If the overall condition of the vehicle is good and only the engine has to be replaced, the owner has to consider choosing between a new engine that may be rather expensive or settle for a reconditioned engine that is as good as new but not as expensive.
If you are considering having your engine reconditioned, you can either log online to conduct a quick search for dealers who will sell you reconditioned engines or select a firm that will recondition your existing engine.
When you opt to have your existing engine spruced up, select a firm that will offer your vehicle a replacement until your engine is ready. The firm must offer a warranty of 6-12 months but some have certain caps on the mileage. They must also use genuine and new parts. In most cases, the reconditioned engines are ready within a week (depending upon the availability of parts).
The cost of reconditioning an engine may range from £1,000 to £5,000 but as it extends the life of the vehicle, many people prefer to use reconditioned engines. Engines may be partly reconditioned or fully reconditioned. When the engine is reconditioned, it is stripped completely and the cylinder head is crack/pressure tested (if necessary they too can be remanufactured). The blocks are cleaned of dust and rust and checked for cracks. The blocks are also resurfaced if necessary. The connecting rods are checked and replaced if necessary. The valves and valve seats are replaced if necessary. The crankshaft is dimensionally checked and tested. Other parts such as the bearings, freeze plugs, oil seals and galley plugs, cylinder liners, pistons rings etc. are replaced with genuine, new parts. If need be, the entire engine is fully fitted with new parts improving the life of your vehicle. Once the reconditioning is complete, the engine is thoroughly tested monitoring the oil flow, oil pressure and the load torque. They are checked for oil leakage and only then refitted.
Some firms offer reconditioned engines in exchange for engines that need to be replaced. There are many used car part dealers that offer engines for a variety of cars. Check out the client testimonials and choose a reputable firm to do your business with. If the vehicle is fitted with a poorly reconditioned engine, the owner may be in for far more trouble than he bargained for. Choose a firm that offers quality reconditioned engines that also come with a warranty.
